Since she was young, Monica Lomanivere has taken care of her grandmother. This has inspired her to up-skill her passion for caregiving.

The 18-year-old hails from Namara in Tailevu Province and joined the Makoi Women’s Vocational Training Centre after completing her Year 12 studies.

She joined the centre in June this year, pursuing a six-month course in caregiving.

The oldest of five siblings was brought up by her grandmother.

“Being raised by my grandmother was a blessing. Although my parents were around me and always there for me, I have so many good memories with my grandmother. She has taught me great values in life,” Monica said.

“Her way of loving, caring and being there for me no matter what, has made me the girl I am today. When I became a big girl, I had the chance to repay at least a little of what she had done for me.”

Monica’s parents make wreaths and also sell yaqona for a living.

Her experiences while growing up had often motivated her to become a caregiver in future.

“When I was in Class (Year) Four, I was looking after one older lady who was in her 60s. I used to care for her as a child and I believe these moments have helped me learn and know more about caregiving,” she said.

“It’s not an easy job; we actually have to love what we do.

“I feel happy around people, especially the older generation. They’ve helped us grow into adults and I feel it’s a great way to thank them.”

With a lot of patience, she loves caring for others.
