Gavoka: Don’t Scale Down The Civil Service

The Social Democratic Liberal Party leader, Viliame Gavoka, disagrees with any notion to scale down the civil service.
His comment comes after the National Federation Party provisional candidate Hiroshi Taniguchi revealed his plan to expel 20 per cent of the workforce.
Mr Taniguchi said: “I am planning to expel 20 per cent of total civil servants. Our government is quite chubby, compared with that of most other countries.”
In response, Mr Gavoka said civil servants are the backbone that holds the country together.
He said the party would focus on capacity building within the service to strengthen it and continue to serve the people rather than scaling down the civil service..
