District Ban After Men Notably Absent From Sunday Services

The poor attendance in church services has pushed the Turaga Na Vunivalu Na Tui Nalawa, Ratu Epeli Niudamu to impose a ban from on kava drinking on Sundays.
The ban would be in place starting this Sunday and would be for 18 villages that fall under the Nalawa District in Ra Province.
Ratu Epeli said he made the call after seeing only women with their children in church every Sunday without the presence of their fathers.
He said a lot of men consumed a heavy amount of grog on Saturday evenings and he intended to show the future generations of Nalawa District that family and God mattered the most.
“They (men) sleep on Sundays while their children sit with their mothers in church,” he said.
“This idea was developed to remedy the issue as this will encourage a very loving and supportive family.”
