Rotuman Weaver Creates Her Handicraft Items As Lifelong Skill

Creating handicraft items is a useful lifelong skill that can be passed from one generation to another, says Luise Managreve.
The 48-year-old from Rotuma moved to Suva in 1991 after completing her Form Six (Year 16) studies.
Ms Managreve is a weaver who started traditional and contemporary weaving 10 years ago.
She makes fans, jewellery, earrings, necklaces, tekiteki (masi flowers), head pieces, wall hangings, Christmas wreaths and decors.
“I believe young women can be whatever they want, all that it takes is effort. I chose to have faith in myself and give myself the chance years back for which I am proud of today,” Ms Managreve said.
“I learnt the basics of weaving from my mother as a child back in Rotuma and that is what brought me here today.”
“I took secretarial classes and I even worked part time at a few places in Suva.”
The mother of two children sells her handicrafts from FNPF Plaza in Suva and is grateful to the Fiji Arts Council for creating spaces for businesses such as hers.
Ms Managreve is encouraging all women to make the most of their opportunities because it might be once in a life opportunity too.
“All women should have faith in themselves that they could be what they desire to be. Life won’t seem easy, but once you are determined to reach a goal, there’s nothing stopping you back.”
