No one know better than Fiji Airways Fijian 7s captain Waisea Nacuqu what it’s like missing out on the selection and not being part of the team to the Rugby World Cup.

Rewind four years back and Nacuqu was sitting at home when the Fijian 7s team was participating in the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco in USA.

The fortune turned around this year – the same Waisea Nacuqu stood on the podium as captain of the Fijian 7s team, lifting the Melrose Cup after 17 years.

The Malakati Flyer said the journey hasn’t been any easy one for him as he arrived at the Nadi International Airport with a hand heavily wrapped due to shoulder injury.

Nacuqu said: “It means a lot to me as we missed the 2018 selection but I came back and worked hard and got selected in the final squad and captained the side to win the World Cup.

“I clearly remember the day in 2018 when we were told we did not made the traveling squad and which was really hurtful but this did not dampen my spirit because I know how competitive it is to make it into the final squad.”

While speaking about the final match against New Zealand in Cape Town, Nacuqu said he did not regret after being replaced due to a hand injury because he knew the job was done.

“I had full faith in the boys and knew that we will be standing tall until the final whistle,” he said.

“We set the platform from the first minute and that was what gave us more confidence to run over New Zealand and pile points.”
