Harry Dugdale: ‘Mum Was Late Queen’s Lady-in-Waiting’

Harry Dugdale is proud to say his mother was a lady in waiting to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Lady Kathryn Dugdale often accompanied Queen Elizabeth II during some of her visits in Fiji.

She served as one of the Queen’s longest-serving ladies-in-waiting from 1955 to 2002.

Her son, Harry Dugdale, is the husband of Adi Litia Mara Cakobau and the son-in-law of the former President and Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.

He met Adi Litia thanks to his mother’s trips to Fiji in 1977 and 1982 when she accompanied Queen Elizabeth II on both occasions.

He said if it was not for the late Queen Elizabeth II, he would not have found his wife.

“I guess the interesting thing is indirectly, it was the Queen that introduced me to my wife,” he said.

“She (his mother Lady Kathryn) had come to Fiji twice with Her Majesty and during those trips, my mother met with the chiefly Mara family.”

I met my wife during one of the Mara family’s trips to England in 1988.

“When the Mara family would come to London, sometimes they would meet with my family.”

It was during one of those occasions I met my wife or my wife-to-be,” he said.

He said his last encounter with the late Queen was at a birthday party at Windsor Castle in 2000.
