Rohit Narayan arrived at his home in Nawaka, Nadi, on Tuesday to find that a fire had destroyed it and the adjoining flat he had rented out.

Mr Narayan, 53, claimed there was no one at his home but in the other flat there were children.

“My neighbour called me at about 3.14pm and my house was on fire but by the time I reached here around 4.25pm my house was engulfed in flames.”

“We need assistance, our clothes are gone and nothing was saved.”

In the meantime, Mr Narayan and his family would stay with his younger brother.

“We don’t know what caused the fire, only the fire officers know,” he said.

“It took 10 to 15 minutes for the fire officers to arrive.

“About three fire trucks arrived. They did their best,” he said.

Mr Narayan claimed that his only concern was there was no one supervising his tenant’s children.

“I heard that someone was passing by and they took the children out of the house,” he said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident.

“A seven-bedroom house made of corrugated iron and timber, property of a 53-year-old manager was completely destroyed with its contents, cause of the fire yet to be ascertained,” she said.

Questions sent to the National Fire Authority but remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
