There will be a new winner of the Vodafone Deans Trophy.

This was after defending champions Queen Victoria School bombed out after losing 21-19 to Natabua High School in the Under-18 national quarterfinal at the HFC Bank Stadium, Suva, today.

The toast of the Natabua High School were Number 8 Alipate Viayalani who scored their third try with eight minutes remaining and first five eight Nemani Volitiviti who kicked over three conversions to give them the edge.

QVS dominated play for most part of the match but Natabua High relied on Volitiviti’s tactical kicking in placing the ball behind the QVS defence and for their fast wingers to pounce on it. This resulted in a runaway try to Rusiate Bainivalu.

Natabua High School coach Etuwasa Loanakadavu said his players stuck to the game plan.

“We knew QVS were going to be strong and fast so we had to dig deep and kept playing 80 minutes rugby,” he said.

“The boys stuck to the game plan and that gave us the win and we are going to prepare well for whoever qualifies next.”
