A man is questioning why he was attacked on what was to be a typical Saturday morning of cutting grass at a temple near his home in Makoi.

Devend Lal of Makoi, who has been volunteering to cut grass at the Shree Sanatan Dharam Ram Mandir since January, was taken by surprise as the incident unfolded.

The 51-year-old self-employed man earns a living by doing odd jobs and also carpentry work.

He said he does not have any grudge against anyone and neither does he know of anyone who has anything against him.

Mr Lal alleged that the trio uttered racist remarks while carrying out the deed.

“I was cutting grass at the temple in Makoi when three men, who were between the ages of 25 to 30 years old, threw stones at me,” he said.

He claimed that when he confronted them, one of them threw a few punches at him which resulted in his bleeding nose.

“I ran for help. He (assailant) picked one concrete block and ran after me and then I ran to my cousin’s place.”

“He chased me around my cousin’s house until I hid in the chicken coop.”‘

“I saw the man make two more rounds around the house.”

To go through such an incident is traumatising and no one should ever go through something like this where they are afraid for their lives.

Mr Lal claimed by that time, his uncle had come to his aid and then the assailant threw away the concrete blocked and ran away.

“I reported the matter at Tuirara Police Post at about after 11am (on Saturday),” he said.

Yesterday he was called in again by Police where a medical report was conducted.

“I hope that these three men will be taken to task as a lesson for them and others.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said Police attended to Mr Lal’s report and were conducting investigations.
