A Nadi mother received the worst news just a few days after she celebrated her 53rd birthday.

Wainikiti Damuni was still coming to terms with the news that her son, Marika Damuni, died following a road accident along the Queens Road near Nasoso, Nadi after 2am yesterday.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said: “The victim was bumped by a truck, driven by a 31-year old Lautoka man. The victim died on the spot.”

“The driver is expected to be questioned soon as investigations continue.”

Ms Damuni said: “My birthday was on September 26 and my son told me to celebrate my belated birthday today (Thursday) once he gets his pay,” she said.

Marika recently started to work as a stewart at the Mamacita Restaurant in Denarau.

“He was a good and caring boy, I will miss him.”

His partner, Alumita Marama, 25, recalled their last meeting.

“He gave me a kiss and said wait here I will be back,” she said.

The family awaits the post-mortem results to determine the funeral. The late Mr Damuni was from Matuku, Lau, with maternal links to Dratabu, Nadi.
