Fiji day is a time set aside to reflect on our country, its significance and the pride citizens take in its achievements while joining hands to commemorate the things that bind us together.

This was the message stressed by the Minister for Employment, Productivity, Industrial Relations, Youth and Sports Parveen Bala while addressing students of the Ba School for Special Education during their Fiji day celebration last week.

The celebration consisted of dance items and the minister handing over first aid kits and yoga mats to the school.

“We have, as a Government, steered us on a path that we thought was best for this beloved nation of ours and we continued the useful work of building a transformed, inclusive and united Fiji.” Mr Bala said.

“History will be the judge of our legacy.”

He commended the management and staff of the special school for the partnership shared with the Fijian Government in providing inclusive education to students with special needs.

“It is hoped that they will become useful citizens of our beloved Fiji in years to come,” he said.

“So, as we celebrate today, I ask that we all pause for a moment to reflect on what the country that we all call home means to us, to our friends, and our families, and what each of us can do to help build a better Fiji for all.”

The school’s head teacher, Ana Tuiova, said the original school building had burned down in 2019. However, she was grateful to the Fiji Muslim League for providing a temporary learning space for the 79s students and 12 teachers.

“As teachers of this school, we know we are the voice of the vulnerable ones and to bring such celebration closer to them, it is something I know they will never forget,” she said.

“The first aid kits will be of great assistance to us and they will go to individual classes, in case of injuries or cuts, the kit is easily available because we know that our school got burned so it will directly benefit the students. The yoga mats will be used when students do physical exercises in classrooms and we will rotate them to the other classes.”
