Banner Was ‘Unfortunate, Inadvertent Error’: FijiFirst

FijiFirst says the placement of its campaign banner on the Suva City Council carpark building was an ‘unfortunate, inadvertent error by our media team’.
This was after the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) directed FijiFirst and the Suva City Council to remove the campaign material that had been placed at the Suva Civic carpark.
In a statement, the party confirmed receiving correspondence from the Fijian Elections Office about the banner.
The FEO had noted that the Suva Civic carpark was not an approved designated area for placement of campaign materials and therefore directed its removal.
“FijiFirst has accordingly been directed to remove the same and they have been given until 4pm on Friday, 14 October 2022 to do so, failing which, the Supervisor of Elections will consider further action according to the Electoral Act 2014,” the FEO said.
FijiFirst said the banner will be removed within the provided time- frame.
“We, of course, subscribe to the premise that all parties are required to place their campaign material in public areas approved and designated for the placement of campaign materials by the Fijian Elections Offices,” the party statement said.
“FijiFirst remains committed to adhering to, and upholding the electoral laws, and working with the Fijian Elections Office in order to achieve a free, fair and credible election, and one where all parties are treated on a level playing field.”
