Cancer Survivor Advises Family Support For Patients

Cancer patients need family, love and support.
This is what cervical cancer survivor Unaisi Lewagata is advocating. She encouraged families to give all the attention they can to cancer patients.
The 38-year-old was diagnosed with cervical cancer in July 2019.
The mother of five said it was important for husbands and partners to be there for their wife or partner.
She added it was common for cancer patients to be in denial when they are diagnosed.
“I was lucky that my husband was there for me and never left my side. When going through something like this, all we want is someone who is positive throughout our journey,” Ms Lewagata said.
“I would like to thank my husband; he was put in my life for a reason and he never gave up on me.”
“In some cases when the wife is diagnosed the husband leaves them and that discourages the wife and makes them suffer more.”
“Cancer takes a lot from a family and as long as a family is there for one another, everything will be okay.”
Ms Lewagata said that it was important to stay away from stressful situations.
“It all started when I continued bleeding. I was on birth control and at times I will not have my period for a few months and when I started bleeding for more than usual, I thought it was normal,” she said.
“I had blood clots and my husband and sons were very helpful because I was always feeling weak and they would take me to the hospital.
“I learned to not sit on your symptoms. When you are experiencing symptoms, get checked because it is easier when it is in the first stage rather than the last stage.”
She had undergone chemotherapy and had surgery to remove her baby bag and fallopian tubes in 2020.
