Nadi based- junior tennis players Niconia Wivou and Alexandria Chand will be flying the Fiji flag at the Les Petit Requins 2022 in Noumea, New Caledonia from October 17-24.
The team departed on Thursday for a two-day stop in Port Vila, Vanuatu before flying to New Caledonia.
The duo made the cut after they won the West Pacific Under-12 championship and will compete with the winners from the East and North Pacific respectively.
Wivou, 11, and Chand, 10, are students of Fiji Agape Mission School in Nadi and they will be competing in the U12 singles and doubles events respectively.
Wivou, who was a member of Makos Swimming Club said her objective is to learn and improve her game.
“At the age of two I learnt to play tennis because tennis is our family sport,” she said.
“At the age of five my parents decided to put me into swimming. I enjoyed it and began swimming for my school and club until I was 10 years old. During the COVID-19 lockdown swimming wasn’t allowed so I decided to go back to tennis.
“I loved the sport and here I am. My discipline is to obey the rules and win my games.”
She is training under Rigamoto Kamoe.
Chand indicated that she is looking forward to her first overseas outing.
“I started playing tennis in 2020 but again this year,” she said.
