Nuku’s Passion For Mat Weaving

Weaving has been Rigieta Nuku’s passion since she left school.
She has been a member of the Fiji Arts Council for the past 10 years and was delighted to have her crafts exhibited at the National Craft Exhibition event after two-year lapse because of COVID-19.
Ms Nuku said this was a great platform for all women across the country to exhibit their work.
“This is not only an event where we come to exhibit our craft but to also give an opportunity for other people to come and see the authentic work being done,” she said.
Art has always been a shadow subject in Fiji.

“For me as individual, though my children have all grown up, I have been the one who has been supporting them in their education through the work that I do,” she said.
Ms Nuku added this platform had also given her mileage in terms of marketing her products.
She has received many overseas orders and there are also orders lined up for the month.
She said they were also given the opportunity by the Fiji Arts Council for them to attend and display their crafts at the Fiji Marriott Hotel during a Fiji Expo event.
“Weaving is part of our culture and it is important, but for someone to tap in to it is dependent solely on them” she said.
