The Ratu Kadavulevu School basketball teams yesterday achieved a better placing than their last outing during the Suva Secondary School Basketball.

RKS fielded three teams; Under 15, 17 and 19 with two grades reaching the semifinals.

Their U15 lost 13-6 to International Secondary School in the semifinals while the U19 lost 19-8 to Yat Sen Secondary School.

The U17 failed to qualify for the semis.

Head coach Marika Beitakivalu said the students learnt and adapted well to basketball despite their first time playing.

A few of the players from each grade also played rugby during the Vodafone Deans competition.

RKS first participated in 2018.

“At the moment basketball is trying to find its footing in Lodoni with rugby as a dominant sport in RKS,” Beitakivalu said.

“However, it’s their fifth year even the past two years we have been stagnant with the sport. Basketball has achieved a lot from our humble beginning in 2018.”

“We started off in 2018 training in school and came straight to the zone and national championship.”

“The students’ knowledge of the game, structure and execution has improved a lot and it showed this year at the Suva zone competition; we had two teams reaching the semifinals.”

“I believe in years to come we can be also a dominant force in basketball.”

“Our participation in the December championship will depend on our principal.”

Meanwhile, Suva Grammar School won the Under-15 girls title, beating International Secondary School 25-15.

Under 15 boys: Yat Sen Secondary School beat Suva Grammar School 21-12.

In the Under 17 girls; International Secondary School edged Suva Grammar School 13-12 while YSS defeated Marist 32-19 to win the Under 17 boys title.

SGS beat Yat Sen Secondary 16-4 to win the girls Under 19 title.
