Eight men appeared at the Magistrates Court in Suva yesterday for their alleged involvement in an incident on October 8 at Kalekana resulting in the injury of a 22-year old mechanic.

The victim’s vehicle was also damaged.

The accused persons are Jale Vilia, Elia Nasakarokaro, Kitione Bunakeli, Apimeleki Tuicaucau, Josateki Nabogi, Leone Lesi Anawai, Joji Robovaja and Timoci Natutusau.

They appeared before different Magistrates charged with various offences which included assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, damaging property, theft and receiving stolen property, as car parts were stripped and given to others and later recovered by the Police investigators.

 

Case Before Magistrate Sherlyn Kiran:

Nasakarokaro is charged with damaging property. He was granted bail in the sum of $500 non-cash and a surety with a bond of $500 non-cash.

The Magistrate ordered Nasakarokaro not to return to Kalekana until further order from the Court.

The matter will be called for mention on November 7.

 

Case Before Magistrate Seini Puamau:

Bunakeli is charged with resisting arrest and was granted bail in the sum of $1000 non-cash and two sureties in the sum of $1000 non- cash.

He is ordered to attend Court each time his case is called and further ordered not to interfere with witnesses and prosecution’s case, not to commit a crime while on bail and not to change his address.

A stop departure order was also issued.

The matter will be called for mention on November 2.

 

Case Before Magistrate Indula Ratnayake:

Nabogi is charged with damaging property while Tuicaucau is charged with receiving stolen property.

Nabogi pleaded guilty to the charge and will be sentenced on October 31.

Tuicaucau was represented by a defence counsel and sought 21 days for plea.

The Police prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that it was a case of interest and for the protection of Kalekana community and the witnesses who lived there.

Tuicaucau was remanded in custody and the matter will be called again on October 26.

 

Case Before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou:

Anawai, Robovaja, Natutusau are charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and theft.

They were granted bail with one surety each with a $500 non-cash bail bond.

They were ordered not to interfere with prosecution witnesses and not to change their addresses.

They were further ordered to report to the Lami Police Station every Saturday anytime between 6am to 6pm.

The matter will be called on December 14 for plea.

 

Case Before Magistrate Lakshitha Jayawardhana:

Vilia is charged with theft and he opted for representation from the Legal Aid Commission.

He was granted bail with one surety bail bond of $500 non-cash with bail conditions.

The matter will be called on November 7 for mention.
