Organisations And Media To Promote Effective Awareness On Issues Of Interest

Veteran journalists are calling on organisations to work together with the media to promote effective awareness on issues of interest.
Fiji Sun acting chief executive officer and acting publisher, Rosi Doviverata, and Fiji Broadcasting Corporation news director, Indra Singh, have both highlighted this.
Mrs Doviverata and Mr Singh were panelists at the Consumer Council of Fiji’s Communications as a Stimulus for Transforming Food Systems discussion.
This was part of a three-tier panel discussion on ‘The role of non-traditional groups of actors in the Agri-food systems transformation for more sustainable, healthy and affordable diets in Fiji’ as part of the World Food Day celebrations at the Holiday Inn in Suva, yesterday.
Mr Singh said it was important for organisations to also train media personnel on projects they were working on as this would give them better understanding when working on their stories.
“Newsrooms are always caught in the middle; more training is better. Let’s work together and collectively,” he said.
Mrs Doviverata said there was always jargon that journalists must break in order to put out a well written story that everyone could understand.
“Organisations must hold talanoa sessions with media personnel for better understanding of work concepts,” she said, adding that this would enable journalists to write stories in layman’s terms.
Mrs Doviverata said this would be possible if adequate funding was provided.
“We are still a business at the end of the day,” she said.
“Liaise with the media for dedicated spaces in the news. It means allocation of certain money to help the business stay afloat. This ensures event build up, event day and way forward is covered in the news – all for public information.”
About the event.
The event dug deep into the role of three particular groups of actors which were academia, consumers and media, to understand the essential part each of them play in the dissemination of messages and raising awareness to the public.
