Mother And Son Brave The Rain On Diwali

Unlike other families who were celebrating Diwali in the comfort of their homes with their loved ones, a Lautoka mother and son braved the rain yesterday selling pineapples and watermelon.
Pramila Devi and her 21-year-old son, Prashant Swami are usually seen along the Navutu stretch selling their produce.
Ms Devi, 45 from Tomuka and her son have been selling on the roadside for about five years now.
Her husband recently had a surgery and for Ms Devi, this Diwali attending to her business was important in terms of getting income to continue supporting the family.
She said the income received would depend on the customers and the weather.
“On good days, we would usually make about $300 from selling watermelon and pineapple,” she said.
She said they would buy their produce from farmers in Rakiraki and they would either sell by the road or at the Lautoka Market daily.
“We usually start our day at 6am and leave for home at around 5.30 or 6pm,” said Ms Devi.
Ms Devi added that Diwali was always a joyous occasion for her family, bringing in a positive spirit and light.
