Is Nayacakalou Our Next 7s Star?

Is Paula Nayacakalou our next Fiji Airways Fijian men’s rugby sevens star forward? The rugby league convert was named as the 13th player in the Fijian men’s squad to play in next weekend’s Hong Kong Sevens tournament.
The robust centre was one of the Kaiviti Silktails stars in last year’s NSW Cup’s Ron Massey Cup competition. His selection was dubbed as incredible by Australia NRL’s (National Rugby League) legendary forward Petero Civoniceva.
“The Kaiviti Silktails RLFC is a development pathway programme that identifies and develops our local Fijian players towards full time professional football opportunities,” Civoniceva said.
“We are now seeing the direct results of our programme. Paula’s selection is a wonderful achievement and is a testament to his hard work, diligence and dedication, especially in his time this year as one of our top Kaiviti Silktail players.”
Nayacakalou is following the footsteps of rugby league converts like Viliame Mata, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Eroni Sau, Aminiasi Tuimaba and so on who have made their mark in the sevens world. Fijian men’s sevens head coach Ben Gollings said it’s time to give the opportunity to members of the extended squad.
Meanwhile, the Fijian men’s women’s sevens teams presented their i-tatau to the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House, Suva, yesterday.
“The boys know what Hong Kong means to them, it is where dreams start in Fiji, our well-wishes are with the team,” Ratu Wiliame said.
Also presenting their isevusevu was the Rooster Chicken Fijiana XVs side and Ratu Wiliame praised their performance at the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
“You went and played your best, no matter the outcome, do not lose heart. Playing with passion and following your dreams pays off, we will continue to support you, we all face hardships in our own lives and even through natural disasters but sevens brings us together and that is why we are a unique nation,” he added.
