The Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum met Fiji’s first open heart surgery patient, 54-year-old, Parma Sivam, from Nadi who underwent a five-hour long open heart surgery at the Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka.

Another patient Anant Kumar of Ba who also underwent a by-pass surgery, and 40-year-old Ritesh Chand, of Vanua Levu who had a tumor removed from his heart.

 

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was at the Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka on Thursday to see the newly refurbished cardiothoracic units under the PPP arrangement.

The PPP arrangement is between the Fijian Government and Health Care Fiji (HCF) which is a joint venture between FNPF and Aspen Medical of Australia. FNPF owns 80 percent of HFC.

Aspen Medical is also responsible for the management and provision of medical services at the Lautoka and Ba Hospitals which fall under the PPP arrangement.

The cost of these procedures was completely paid for by the Fijian Government to HCF.

 

The AG also viewed the new internationally-rated operating theatre.

Lautoka Hospital is also now home to a state-of-the-art computerized tomography (ICT) scanner including a new mammogram machine that is guaranteed to give the most accurate results for early breast cancer, helping to save, in particular, female lives.
