The opening of the newly built Gurukul Centenary Building at Gurukul Primary School in Saweni, Lautoka will cater for the growing number of students.

This was the statement made by the head of school, Shrimati Chand following the official opening of the $551,000 building last Friday.

The new Gurukul Centenary Building at the 104-year-old school was funded by the Rajendra-Sahay Trust of Lautoka.

The building comprises four classrooms, two sick bays and a hall.

First Recipient

Ms Chand said the project could not have been possible without the supportive school management team. The Arya Pratinidhi Sabha (APS) of Fiji Education director, Pandit Kamlesh Arya, said Gurukul this was the first of Sabha’s 40 primary schools around the country to receive such a donation.

Mr Arya said the project was first formulated by the school’s former head of school to construct a computer lab, a library and washrooms.

“Sabha has been scouting around for further donations to complete the project, however $350,000 has not materialised, Sabha’s effort to raise funds to complete the remaining part will continue in months and years ahead,” he said.

“Should a donor contribute $175,000 to build the library or the computer room or $350,000 to build both in both scenarios the donor will get the naming right.”

He said Gurukul achieved a milestone and an appeal was put out to people to help for the completion of the project.

Chief guest and trustee of Rajendra-Sahay Trust of Lautoka, Rajendra Prasad said it was a proud moment for the students of Gurukul and the organisation was content to be able to financially assist the primary school with the construction of the building.

Sister, Nirmala Deo said Gurukul had been an integral part of the family and it had made them proud as a family to support the school.
