The Digicel national women’s football side opened their Pacific Four Nations tournament campaign with a 2-0 win over Papua New Guinea in Canberra, Australia, yesterday.

Known as the Kula Girls, they took the lead in the 30th minute from a Cema Nasau goal.

It was a tough tussle in the second half before the Fijians extended their lead to 2-0 when Luisa Tamanitoakula scored in 84th minute.

The other two participating teams are Solomon Islands and the Young Matildas (Australia).

The Young Matildas is led by head coach Leah Blayney with the new cycle of players set to be tested against PNG who was crowned Oceania champions in July.

PNG remains in contention to qualify for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 via next February’s inter-Confederation play-off against Singapore and Panama.
