Young waste recyclers in the country received a boost to their campaign work after a new set of smart phones were handed to them on Monday.

Known as the Recycling on the Go (ROG) ambassadors, students from Jai Narayan College are making sure their school is kept clean including other communities as well.

The ROG project is an initiative of the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) in partnership with Swire Shipping and the school.

The smart phones were provided by Bondwell Fiji to empower the 24 ROG ambassadors in their recycling advocacy work.

PRF founder, Amitesh Deo, told students that activism started with ply cards and marches and these traditional means of activism still remain relevant, the world has become more digitised.

“You all are activists in your own right. You will carry on with your role using different tools to influence attitude and behaviour change, in this case, on recycling and for those involved in informal waste picking, in particular women and members of the LGBTQI+ groups,” Mr Deo said.

“We have had down moments of addressing name-calling where Premila Kumar spoke to you all about the importance of continuing your journey regardless of what the apparent challenge might be.

“We have shared laughs during clean-up campaigns, training sessions and your ROG Leader was even aired on overseas media during the French Embassy’s round table discussion.”

The programme came to life in 2018 and has been operational ever since, all thanks to its partners and supporters.
