Skipper Walks Free, Acquitted Of Rape Charge

A boat captain at a renowned island resort located in the Mamanuca Group was set free by the High Court in Lautoka on Monday.

The man, who was acquitted of a rape charge, appeared before High Court Judge, Justice Riyaz Hamza.

Judgment

In delivering the judgment, Justice Hamza said the then 37-year-old victim had known each other since they first met at the same resort in 2017.

He said the man had pleaded not guilty to the charge of rape.

He said the alleged incident happened on March 30, 2019 in Nadi at the victim’s home.

He mentioned the man had testified that the victim had given her consent for them to be together and if it was without her consent he would not have done what he did.

Justice Hamza further stated that the defence version was more credible than the State therefore the State failed to prove the charge of rape against the man.

He was found not guilty and set free.
