Government reps clean up in Labasa on November 9, 2022.

As part of the national disaster awareness week, the Commissioner Northern’s office and various Government departments conducted a clean-up campaign in Labasa on Wednesday.

Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Doctor James Fong said they supported a pre-disaster clean-up arranged by the Commissioner’s Office.

“We are doing this in selected areas throughout Fiji,” Dr Fong said.

He said the clean-up was one of the ways to mitigate flooding because rubbish always clogged up drains.

Meanwhile, Macuata District Advisory Council chairperson, Anil Prasad advised everyone to clean their surroundings, drains and rubbish dump areas.

“We all need to put in an effort not only in preparation for disaster but to prevent outbreak of leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue and diarrhea (LTDD),” Mr Prasad said.

“Along with the cyclone season people prepare for the festive season and many forget about health care.”

He advised people to be proactive.
