Teachers Take Initiative, Assists Family Who Lost Home In Fire

Labasa District Scouters Council has taken a lead role to assist a family who lost everything in a house fire at Coqeloa, Labasa on October 4.
The council, made up of 40 teachers, raised funds and donated a tent to the family of five members.
The family lives in a temporary shelter which is made from the remains of the burnt house.
Fiji Scout’s Association District Commissioner Labasa Swatantra Singh said they decided to assist the family with a tent so that they could safely carry out their house chores.
“For us it is difficult to imagine what life could be without a proper shelter and then rebuilding from what was lost in a fire,” Mr Singh said.
“We decided to help the family as part of our community assistance drive.”
He thanked the members for their contribution.
Yesterday, the owner of the house, Davendra Kumar was pleading for urgent assistance of housing materials because they want to build a proper house before the cyclone comes.
“I know everyone is busy preparing for the festive season and election,” the father of three children said.
“While for us as a family we think about saving ourselves from natural disaster.”
The 53-year-old sugarcane farmer thanked the organisation for the provision of a tent.
