The inaugural commercial flights to and from Vancouver is great news for Fijians living in Canada.

Former Fiji residents, Ajendra Prasad and his wife Sharin Prasad returned to Canada last night after spending two weeks holiday at home.

“This is exciting, no more 24-hour flight transiting to other countries before getting here,” Ms Prasad said.

“So this means we would be coming home often.”

Ms Prasad was back home after 14 years.

“It’s good to see that Fiji has changed so much in terms of the developments, roads, big buildings and we enjoyed our stay.”

Mr Prasad however was back home after 30 years.

“So much has changed but why did it take so long to get this direct route going?” he asked.

The couple are thankful for this great milestone.

Fiji Airways  Executive General Manager Corporate Affairs Shaenaz Voss encouraged Canadians to take advantage of the twice-weekly flights to enjoy the world-renowned Fijian hospitality.

“Our Five Star airline and multi-award winning on board experience including meals, amenities and staff service offer the best value for money,” she said.

“The inaugural return flight from Vancouver to Nadi has a seat load factor of 88%, that’s huge given that we have only just entered the market.”

“It’s also great news for our tourism industry as well. We are creating a pathway for an entirely new segment, which has seen very little traction over the years.

“Canada currently averages fifth on the list of monthly visitor arrivals, there is enormous untapped potential in a country that’s had more than 12 million residents travelling internationally in 2019,” Ms Voss said.

The new route also provides convenient onward connections between Australia, New Zealand and Canada and other Pacific Island nations looking for new trade opportunities.

Goods that take up to a week to reach Canada or from Canada to Fiji are now transported overnight.

There have also been talks with Biosecurity Authority of Fiji to ensure that a regular pathway is open for Fiji’s exports with BAF’s counterpart in Canada.

The National airline will fly to and from Vancouver every Monday and Friday.
