Let’s Go Local: Vomo’s Investment Expansion In Zero-Waste Water

As more tourism operators look internally for measures to reduce operational costs, one island resort has turned to the use of salt in a water recycling
system.
At Vomo Island Resort, the introduction of e-water systems is also an effort to enhance environment protection efforts.
“We have this installed in our Vomo kitchens, and use this system to safely wash fruits and vegetables, and use in kitchen cleaning,” director sales and marketing of the Mamanuca luxury private island es- cape, Karen Marvell.
For the resort’s executive chef, Iain Todd, and culinary manager, Michael Fosbender, the e-water system is a respite from chemical-free tapped water supply.
“It is safer to have around food,” Ms Marvell said.
“It is safer for our environment, and is very effective as a cleaning agent.
“We use it on hard surfaces around the resort, with great results.”
Installed by Australian company eWater Systems, it works through an onsite generator that uses salt, water and electricity, to recycle water in a low-cost yet secure supply of water.
According to eWater Systems, the zero- waste and organic-certified solution, has extensively tested and proven to kill a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms.
Vomo Island Resort has 28 villas and two private residences. eWater Systems owner and founder, Phil Gregory, expects the business to tap into
more local resorts.
“Vomo is the first Fijian Resort to install eWater on site generators, initially in their kitchens in February this year,” Mr Gregory said.
“They are currently the only Fijian resort with eWater, although we believe many more will follow.
“The successful introduction at Vomo was highlighted by a reduction in the use and purchase of traditional packaged chemicals – resulting in cost savings and in creating a safer work environment.”
Vomo then purchased a second system in September – this time for housekeeping applications.
E-water systems have over a decade of proven record as a hygienic solution service provider to sectors that include the:
- health care,
- aged care,
- mining,
- hospitality and events, and
- education.
