The People’s Alliance (PA) and the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) will consider releasing the 2000 coup maker George Speight and others if they are voted into Government.

Speight has spent more than 20 years in prison after his involvement in the 2000 coup.

He pleaded guilty for treason on February 18, 2002, and was sentenced to death.

The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment the same day by the then President Ratu Josefa Iloilo.

In the same year, 10 other rebels received sentences of between 18 months and three years for kidnapping.
