Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem.

After receiving the results of the 2022 General Election from the Supervisor of Election, Mohammed Saneem yesterday, the Electoral Commission has retired to calculate the seat allocation for the 55 seats for the next Parliament.

The following will take place today.

  •  1pm – The Electoral Commission will announce the list of candidates that will enter Parliament.
  •  2pm – Return the writ of the 2022 General Elections to the President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

This is in accordance with Section 67 of the Constitution:

After members of Parliament are sworn in, the first order of business of Parliament is to appoint a Speaker according to Section 77 of the Constitution.

The Speaker has to be from outside Parliament (and a Deputy Speaker from among the newly sworn MPs.)

Since no political party won more than 50 per cent of the total number of seats in Parliament, then at the first sitting of Parliament, the Speaker must call for nominations from members of Parliament.
