Not All Threats Equal Harm: Kalouniwai
Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai.

It must be clear that not all threats, nor those that threaten our security, are equal in their potential for harm,” says Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major-General Jone Kalouniwai.

His comments follow an outburst on social media after the Commissioner of Police, Brigadier-General called in the military to assist because of growing reports of stone-stoning on businesses and homes of Fijians with Indian descent.

“This request by Police Commissioner – Brigadier Qiliho requesting for RFMF support is a normal procedure that the FPF would use when they would require the RFMFs assistance,” he said.

He stressed that threats to security brought by Police would be taken seriously, adding that it would also be evaluated, verified and acted upon in proportion to the level of threat assessed.

“The Police Commissioners request comes in light of the growing rhetorics shared openly on social media and those gathered through the various information received by both the FPF and the RFMF,” he said.

“Some of the threats identified highlight a growing amount that warns of an imminent violent act happening unless certain demands or terms are met.

“Other threats suggest a specific target, whilst others are still being assessed due to them being vague, unclear, and ambiguous.

Major-General Kalouniwai reiterated that the military was called to only assist and that the Police was leading the operation of maintaining law and order.

“I wish to assure the people that our responsibilities here is to assist the Police. The RFMF will respect whatever the outcome is and we urge everyone to do likewise,” he said.

“On the other hand, we do know that there are people out there who would like to take advantage of this situation, we appeal that you refrain from doing so.

“The FPF and the RFMF (in its supporting role) will within the bounds of the law do all it can to deter and prevent such illegal irresponsible actions or activities to occur.”
