A-G Confirms Suspension of Supervisor of Elections for Alleged ‘Misbehavior’

The Attorney General, Siromi Turaga issued this statement today to confirm the suspension of the Supervisor of Elections by His Excellency the President on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission.
The Attorney General said “the Supervisor of Elections, Mr Mohammed Saneem, was today suspended by His Excellency, The President, on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission in accordance with section 137(4) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.”
“The Commission received a complaint of misbehaviour warranting the removal from office of Mr Saneem,” he said
The Attorney General elaborated and confirmed that “the Commission resolved at its meeting held Wednesday, 18 January 2023, that the complaint needs to be investigated by a Tribunal pursuant to section 137(3)(a)(i) of the Constitution.”
Turaga confirmed that “Mr Saneem is suspended pending the appointment of a Tribunal and subsequent investigation into the complaint made. Mr Saneem’s suspension is with full pay.”
He added that “Mr Saneem was provided an opportunity to address the complaint prior to the Commission’s deliberation yesterday.”
The Attorney General confirmed that “in the meantime, the Directors of the Fijian Elections Office will manage the administrative affairs of the office of the #Supervisor of Elections ”
