The Ministry of Education will announce the specification of its planned scholarships today.

Whether it will fund specific areas or generalise them, line minister, Aseri Radrodro said a statement from him would provide finer details.

“We are still having discussions and are finalising it,” he said after having a series of meetings at his office yesterday.

Mr Radrodro had made a request to Cabinet that more time be given to the ministry and the Ministry of Finance to work out a solution for the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS).

When questioned on financing the near-$600 million student loan, Mr Radrodro said: “Ask the Minister for Finance.”

However, he indicated a decision on forgiving the loan may likely be announced today.

He said the Ministry of Finance would fund the full scholarships but he could not reveal how many would be offered to Fijian students.

Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, said he would only talk on the matter after the statement from the Education Ministry was released.

“You get the details about it there then I’ll talk to you maybe on Monday,” he said.
