Continuous Lightning Activity Causes Power Disruption In Western Viti Levu

We have been experiencing heavy rains, thunder and lightning activity in most parts of Fiji, especially the interior and the high lands for the past many weeks.

Continuous rain, thunder and lightning in the Western Viti Levu had caused a major unplanned power outage at 3:44pm this afternoon, Sunday 29th January, 2023. The continuous thunder and lightning has damaged a 132,000volts Current Transformer at the Vuda Zone Substation resulting in an unplanned outage to our customers in the Western Division.

Our teams were able to use the thermal power stations to supply electricity to our valued customers as follows:

  • Sigatoka – fully supplied
  • Nadi – most of the customers have power supply restored
  • Lautoka – fully supplied
  • Ba – some parts have power supply restored
  • Tavua – yet to be restored
  • Rakiraki – some customers and critical services have power supply restored

Power supply to 90% of our customers was restored before 6:00pm this afternoon.

We acknowledge the support provided by our major Corporate Customers in the Western Division who have gone offline and are running their generators, till we are able to rectify the fault and restore power supply fully.

With the limited supply from the thermal power stations in the Western Division, we would be rotating supply in 2 hourly blocks till we are able to rectify the fault fully.

Our teams are currently working on rectifying the fault before power supply can be fully normalized to the remaining areas. Depending on the weather, we are hoping that the repairs works will be completed before 10:00pm tonight, Sunday 29th January, 2023.

EFL sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused to all our valued customers due to this unplanned power outage which was beyond our control.
