Meredani Qoro had her passport burnt last year because she defied her mother’s wish to concentrate on her studies and not play rugby.

The 18-year-old former St Thomas High School sprinter dropped out half way through Year 12 following that incident and has not looked back.

“My mother was angry when I told her that I wanted to play rugby. When I was named in the schoolgirls’ side to tour New Zealand last year, she told my brother to burn my passport to deter me from going,” Qoro said.

That schoolgirls’ tour was called off. Qoro dropped out of school. She has since focussed on playing rugby; she knows rugby is her new lease of life.
