President: First GCC Meeting In May

The Great Council of Chiefs will have its first meeting in May.
President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere said this on Friday while opening the new Parliament year.
He said Government would undertake consultations and preparatory work before the relevant Bills were tabled in parliament.
The principal iTaukei statutes and institutions would be reviewed in accordance with the universal standards of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the ILO Convention 169 on the Rights of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples.
Up for review are the iTaukei Affairs Act, iTaukei Lands Act, iTaukei Land Trust Act, iTaukei Trust Fund Act, iTaukei Development Fund Act, iTaukei Affairs Board, Provincial, Tikina and Village Councils, iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission, iTaukei Land Trust Board, iTaukei Trust Fund Board, and the Centre for Appropriate Technology and Development in Nadave.
The objective, Ratu Wiliame said was to improve the economic position of the iTaukei and lift the living standards of villages and settlements.
