In an interview, the senior official said he wanted the Commission to be reinstated.

Former Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister’s office, Jioji Kotobalavu reiterated the need for the Commission to be re-estab­lished.

“It should be restored so that the salary packages for the CEOs of all these bodies, including Permanent Secretaries should be rationally es­tablished by an independent body,” Mr Kotobalavu said.

Mr Kotobalavu has more than 30 years of experience starting his career in the government sector in 1968, when Fiji was still a British colony.

The Higher Salaries Commission was established in 1983.

Its core function was to coordinate and harmonize salary range for top level jobs in government statutory bodies, and the civil service by us­ing the private sector as the com­parator.
