Emali Lawalawa, 64, is glad she had a chance to apply for social welfare benefits from her village, on Monday.

She lives at Malawai Village, on the island of Gau, in the Lomaiviti Province.

If she had to travel to the capital city, Suva, to apply for benefits, it would cost her more than $200 just one way.

“That’s so expensive for me,” she said.
