Let’s Go Local: A Trip To Taveuni For Kasavu Man Now CEO In Canada
Innovate BC President and chief executive officer Raghwa Gopal with his wife Sarita Gopal.

Raghwa Gopal was once known as the boy who cannot afford to pay for school.

He was born and raised in Kasavu, Nausori.

Growing up in a humble and challenging background only made Mr Gopal stronger.

Today, the former DAV Boys College student, now DAV College, is the President and chief executive officer at Innovate BC.

Innovate BC is a crown agency of the Province of British Columbia, Canada, which funds entrepreneurial support programmes in the province. Innovate BC focuses on the support of technology startups and entrepreneurs through programs, sponsorship and competitions that facilitate technology commercialization.

Mr Gopal is married to Sarita Gopal of Lakena and is blessed with two children who are running their own businesses in Canada.

He moved to Canada in 1979 after working at the Fiji National Provident Fund for three years as a software developer and IT manager.

He became a serial entrepreneur who has extensive experience starting, growing and selling numerous businesses.

He recently joined Innovate Bc from Accelerate Okanagan (AO), where he was also CEO.

At AO, Mr Gopal was instrumental in the creation and management of successful programmes for technology companies at all stages of growth, and he has been a driving force in the development of the Okanagan’s tech sector into a $1.6 billion (CAN) economic contributor.

Mr Gopal and his wife visited Fiji last month and explored many restaurants & coffee shops, shopped at Nadi market for fresh fruits & veggies, attended the wedding of my niece in Suva, stayed at Landers Bay Resort in Lautoka, Yatule Resort in Sigatoka, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa in Nadi and Namale Resort in Savusavu.

What is one place in Fiji you would take visitors to and why?

Landers Bay Resort in Lautoka.

Located right on the ocean with white sandy beach, the scenery is so beautiful, with great ocean breeze, and fairly quiet (not too busy) – just a great place for relaxing.

Also, the food is amazing, the cocktails are not only pleasing to the eye but absolutely mesmerizing – and the service is out of this world. Give it a try!

How many places have you visited around Fiji?

In Viti Levu – I have been to almost all parts of Viti Levu. I grew up in Nausori and worked in Suva. Now we have a place in Nadi.

In Vanua Levu – we have been to Labasa & Savusavu. Also visited Koro Island – where my father-in-law grew up.

The Hidden Paradise of Savusavu.

Where is your favorite place for coffee & pie?

The Deli @ Hilton Beach Resort & Spa – coffee is great, the pastries are delicious and you get to meet and talk to some very cool people!

What is your backyard spot and why?

Chilling under a mango tree – especially on a hot day and enjoying the nice cool breeze.

What is one place in Fiji that’s on your bucket list – and why?

Taveuni (the Garden Island) – I have heard so much about the beauty and nature of this island so I want to experience it for myself. I will make this a priority for our next visit.

Bouma Waterfall in Taveuni Island.
