‘Lets Go Local’-Jay Whyte: The Man Behind Fiji’s World-Renowned Sigatoka Safari
Sigatoka River Safari Managing Director Jay Whyte

Jay Whyte is the founder and driving force behind the success of the world-famous Sigatoka Safari in Fiji.

At the age of 27, he moved to Fiji with the aim of creating the first-ever Jet boat and village Safari, and his hard work paid off when the business launched on March 9th, 2006.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of his career has been working with the people of Navosa, an experience he describes as an honor.

Mr Whyte has gained immense personal joy and appreciation for the inclusivity of the community, which has embraced him as one of their own.

He was even given the name Henibua by the chiefly house Nawerelevu Naraunivuga, Nahautabu in Nadroga.

Over the years, Mr. Whyte has been involved in various roles that have enabled him to give back to the community.

He founded the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament and served as a special administrator for the Sigatoka town council.

He also served on the Fiji Rugby Union board for seven years and held other board appointments.

What is one place in Fiji you would take visitors to and why?

I have a special connection to Navosa, a region of Fiji that I fell in love with as a 13-year-old.

The beauty of the region’s interior is unparalleled, but it is the people, particularly the Koi Yata, who truly captured my heart.

How many places have you visited around Fiji?

Numerous locations throughout Fiji, including the interior of Viti Levu, specifically Navosa, which is considered “god’s country.”

I have also driven around the entirety of Viti Levu, as well as visited the islands of Vatulele, Yasawas, and Mamanucas. In July, I will be heading to Nakalou in Macuata for a family reunion.

Where is your favorite place for coffee & pie?

I am not a coffee drinker but enjoys Tappoo’s Cuppabula in Sigatoka, where they serve the best iced chai latte.

What is your backyard spot and why?

Spending time with family and friends

What is one place in Fiji that’s on your bucket list – and why?

The Lau Island group because of its remote location and breathtaking natural beauty.

Qilaqila a group of island in Lau.
