18 Lives Lost So Far In 2023 To Motor Vehicle Accidents

Road deaths before the first quarter of the year have recorded 18 lives which have been lost in 2023 due to motor vehicle accidents.

Fiji Police Force chief operations officer Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (A/ACP) Livai Driu said a number of victims were pedestrians, some were heavily intoxicated with liquor, some died because of the inconsiderate behaviours of drivers who continued to speed, and driver fatigue.

A/ACP Driu is calling on everyone to follow road safety regulations.

“Drivers have their part to play, but so do pedestrians,” A/ACP Driu said.

“Attitudes must change if we are to avoid accidents, fatalities and understand that advisories issued and the laws in place are there for everyone’s safety,” he said.

“Please adhere and comply with road rules whether you are a driver or pedestrian.”

The road death toll currently stands at 18 compared to three for the same period last year.
