Care Of Elderly Inmates Top Corrections Agenda

 A serious concern at the Fiji Corrections Service correctional facilities is the big number of elderly people in prison.

More than 71 inmates around Fiji are over 60 years old.

Touring the Suva Corrections facilities yesterday, Attorney-General Siromi Turaga revealed that the elderly inmates had serious medical conditions and some needed adult diapers.

He said some of them were not a risk and the issue was whether they should be released or continue being kept in prison.

When questioned whether they would consider early release for elderly inmates with medical conditions, Mr Turaga said there was no provision in the Corrections Act that permitted that.
