Commercial kava farm­ers may need to work together to get the best deals for the industry, after Asian interest in the product peaked.

In fact, local farmers should move away from using the product for a quick buck.

“Local farmers will make more money out of kava if they add value to the product,” Minis­ter for Trade Manoa Kamikamica said.

This as Asian investors showed interest in the pharmaceutical powers of the Pacific’s traditional beverage.

“There were a lot of opportunities for Fijian businesses in the pharmaceutical area,” Mr Kamikamica said.
