Dreketi Primary School head teacher could not hold back his emotions yesterday during the groundbreaking ceremony of six classrooms and two ablution blocks.
Salendra Vijay said some students had been studying under five tents after Tropical Cyclone Yasa destroyed two-thirds of the school building in December 2019.
Year Eight students are studying in an old building, which is non-compliant to occupational and health safety.
Teachers are using one existing classroom as library, staff room, guests tea room and photocopying area. There are 10 teachers, 174 students and 26 preschoolers.
