State To Host Reconciliation Service

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma in collaboration with Government will host a reconciliation service on May 14.
This is the same date in 1987 when the first military coup in Fiji was executed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka who at the time was a Lieutenant Colonel and his Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit soldiers.
Methodist Church president Reverend Ili Vunisuwai said the reconciliation service was intended to bridge the gap between the iTaukei and Indo-Fijian communities.
The service will be at the Vodafone Arena in Suva from 2pm-3pm on May 14.
“It’s a two-way reconciliation where all races, denominations and religions are invited by the Methodist Church which is hosting the event in collaboration with the government,” Rev Vunisuwai said.
Fiji Girmit Council secretary Selwa Nadan said the council hoped to see genuine reconciliation.
“I think the last government was supposed to establish a truth and reconciliation commission so it would be good to establish that if the coalition government is keen to do that as this would bring more issues out in the open and how best we can move forward together to reconcile,” he said.
