The Fiji Airways Fijian men’s rugby sevens team will need to lift their performance if they are to beat Samoa and Spain in their pool matches of the Singapore Sevens.

The Ben Gollings coached-side was far from their best as they struggled to beat Canada 21-12 in today’s pool opener.

Veteran forward Sevuloni Mocenacagi was slow and Joseva Talacolo looked worn out before he was replaced after scoring the third try that sealed Fiji’s win.

Trailing 5-0 and with Pilipo Bukayaro yellow carded for a high tackle, Fiji winger Vuiviawa Naduvalo ran in two tries with Waisea Nacuqu adding the conversions for a 14-5 lead at halftime.

Canada narrowed the deficit to 14-12 before Talacolo scored the third try with Napolioni Bolaca landing the conversion for a 21-12 win.

Samoa survived a Spain comeback to win 28-24. Fiji takes on Samoa at 7.30pm and Spain 11.33pm.
