London: Buckingham Palace has gone into lockdown after a man allegedly threw what appeared to be shotgun cartridges into the palace grounds.

Officers detained the man at 7pm on Tuesday (local time) after he approached the gates of the palace and allegedly threw a number of items into the area.

These have been recovered and will be taken for specialist examination, according to UK’s Metropolitan police.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

Cordons have also been put into place after the man was allegedly found to have a suspicious bag, police said.

Specialists have attended the scene and have conducted a controlled explosion as a precaution.

“Officers worked immediately to detain the man and he has been taken into police custody,” Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Joseph McDonald said.

“There have been no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries to officers or members of the public.

“Officers remain at the scene and further enquiries are ongoing.”

Roads have reopened since the incident, and the majority of the cordons have been lifted.

The incident comes just after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met King Charles at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday ahead of the monarch’s coronation.

“It was pleasure to meet King Charles III again at Buckingham Palace, and an honour to represent Australia at his Coronation,” Albanese said in a tweet.

Albanese is due to attend official events related to the coronation on Friday and Saturday.
