Savenaca Colata, 54, is the country’s latest road fatality following an accident in Nadi last Friday night.

This was been confirmed by Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro yesterday.

Ms Naisoro said Mr Colata was allegedly walking along the Lavusa Road in Nadi when he was hit by a vehicle driven by a 67-year-old man.

“The victim was rushed to the Nadi Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” she said.

The victim’s neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said Mr Colata, a Biosecurity Authority of Fiji staff was on his way to work when the incident happened.

His family refused to comments.

More accidents in West

In another road mishap yesterday, a woman and three children of Laselase in Sigatoka were treated and sent home after the vehicle they were traveling in was involved in an accident along the Queens Road near Nabou.

The four were passengers in the vehicle driven by a man from Yadua Village in Sigatoka.

The driver, 60, is alleged to have lost control of the vehicle causing it to veer off the road.

Yesterday after 8am, three people were conveyed to the Sigatoka Hospital after the vehicle they were traveling in was involved in a head-on collision along the Queens Road on the Vatukarasa Bridge.

Police are now searching for the driver who fled the scene.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Livai Driu said traffic accidents continue to be of great concern.

“Every day we are booking hundreds of drivers for speeding. Some of them drive well above the national speed limit getting caught driving above 100kmph. These are very dangerous habits that lead to accidents and fatalities.”

ACP Driu said Police were aware of chat groups sharing information of Police officers’ whereabouts during traffic operations.

He said such alert groups would only lead to more dangerous driving behaviour and loss of life on Fiji’s roads.

“The road death toll stands at 31 compared to nine for the same period last year. Police cannot be everywhere which is why we issue advisories on road safety and hope they will be taken seriously and adhered to at all times,” ACP Driu said.
