John Naiker Grateful For Legacy

Sixty-year-old John Naiker said he was grateful that knowledge of his family’s heritage had been passed down to him from his elders.
“My great grandfather Kali Naiker arrived in Fiji when he was 36 years old onboard the ship MV Sutlej,” he said.
“He left Madras, India on August 17, 1912 according to his emigration man’s pass. My grandparents shared this knowledge with my father, and he passed it down to me, so we are passing it down from generation to generation.
“He settled first in Levuka, Ovalau where he started his Girmit days then he moved to Ba, but my grandfather was born in Ovalau. My great-grandparents only had one son and he married my grandmother there then they moved to Ba, spent a few years there and moved to Vitogo, Lautoka before moving over to Lovu seaside.”
